Series: Onmyouji
Name: Abe no Seimei
Age: Enigmatically unrevealed. Appears to be in his mid-twenties, but hints suggest he’s older than that.
Gender: Male

Appearance: Seimei is neither especially tall nor short, probably standing somewhere around 5’9”. He has long black hair than, when down, reaches nearly to his waist. Usually, however, his hair is kept in the typical Heian fashion: tied up in a top knot and hidden underneath a kanmuri, a circular hat that is short and flat in front with a tall, oval-shaped part in back and a long piece of lacy fabric coming from the back, or a tate-eboshi, a tall, somewhat see-through hat. He has a face that is that the Japanese think of as stereotypically fox-like: long and thin with narrow features. His is a very expressive face, easily showing whatever he is emoting, be it happiness, sadness, shock or, more usually, a sly sort of mocking.

Seimei wears clothing common to any member of the Heian court. Most of the time he chooses to wear a kariginu, which has a top that looks somewhat like the later kimono. It folds left over right and drapes at the waist. The sleeves are long and wide, and the whole thing falls to the knees. Underneath he wears sashinuki, a billowy sort of pants that are tied off at the ankle. Most of the time Seimei wears kariginu in blues, greens or white. When attending court functions, however, he wears the more formal ikan, which has a cut quite similar to the kariginu, though the top falls lower on the leg, and is always black.

Personality: Seimei is the type to feel deeply for things and people he cares about, but to almost completely ignore anything else. He is ambivalent towards most things in the human world, and most especially toward politics. He does, however, care about natural, the spiritual world, and some individual people, Minamoto no Hiromasa in particular. He also believes the sanctity of all life is important, and would rather have his enemies reform themselves than kill them.

Seimei enjoys playing tricks on people, especially those easily fooled. He also tends to make jokes at other people’s expense and to mock people. It doesn’t matter whether friend or foe, he’s likely to make fun of them. He considers many situations that others might find serious to be jokes, merely laughing at things others would think are dangerous because he knows his powers will keep him unharmed. In addition, he enjoys keeping an air of mystery around himself, and loves to be able to surprise, shock, or annoy people.

Though he does enjoy his jokes, Seimei knows to treat truly serious situations with the gravity they deserve. When those he cares about are in trouble or danger, he will do whatever it takes to help them. He can act with great professionalism toward those of high rank in the Mikado’s court, though he doesn’t think much of any of the other onmyouji.

Seimei is supremely confident and often smug. Not only does he know he’s a strong onmyouji, he believes himself to be better than any other, and this belief has proved correct a number of times. He also considers himself smarter than most people, and possessing of more wits. He doesn’t let his confidence get in the way of getting to know the few people he finds interesting, however, and he tends to treat those people as equals.

Particulars: Onmyoudou: Seimei is a strong onmyouji, well-versed in the traditional Japanese magic. It can be used for any number of things. He can create and dispel all sorts of curses and spells, as well as show a spells true form or transfer curses from one person to another. He can see spirits, ghosts, and demons, and create false people called shikigami or make doppelgangers of himself. He can make things float or freeze things or people in time. He can create holy barriers, purge evil, or transfer life from one person to another. He can read the stars and lucky or unlucky signs to tell the future. Onmyoudo’s spells can be used for many other things, as well.

Kendo: Seimei has had some sword training, muse as any other male member of the Heian court would have. It isn’t his strong point, however, and he’s more likely to dodge and parry than to attack anyone.

Canon History: Abe no Seimei was a historical person, so some of his early history has been taken from the actual person.

Rumor has it that thought Seimei’s father was human, his mother was a fox spirit, and that it was because of that heritage he has such strong spiritual powers. As a small child it was said he could not only see spirits but also command demons to do his will. He didn’t appear to care very much for people, so he was sent to study onmyoudou with Kamo no Tadayuki to keep him from becoming evil.

He caught on to the art quite easily, and he eventually was given a position as a court onmyouji. Over time he rose through the ranks, a system more based on seniority than ability. While nominally following the rules that go along with a rank system, he never seemed to care much for the hierarchy.

One day in 944 AD, all the court onmyouji were called to assemble to read the fortune of the Mikado’s unborn child with his second wife. Seimei instead went to speak with the Mikado’s first wife, Sukehime, who was grieving the loss of her husband’s love. Leaving the palace he encountered the head onmyouji, Doson, leaving the assembly, and he was challenged to kill a butterfly, which he seemingly did; in actuality he saved it and it, in human form and calling herself Mitsumushi, went to stay with him.

Soon after that he was approached by a courtier called Minamoto no Hiromasa, who had come to ask him to help another courtier, Kaneie, with a strange fruit that had appeared in the man’s garden. Though at first Hiromasa was afraid of him, their meeting began a strong friendship between the two. Seimei took care of the spell and taught Hiromasa about how spells work: that even something as basic as a name is a spell, making a person who they are.

The Mikado’s new son was born, and was almost immediately the victim of a curse. Doson was supposed to be helping take the curse off, but it didn’t seem to be working, so Hiromasa asked Seimei to come remove it. He agreed, and they went to meet a woman named Aone who could help with the removal. The spell was strong, but Seimei was able to drive it out of the baby into Aone.

Later that night he did a spell that would drive the curse out of Aone so that Hiromasa could kill it. However, the form the spell took when it comes out was frightening, and Hiromasa failed to kill it, letting it escape. The next morning Aone gave Seimei a mysterious warning: that he should treasure Hiromasa, since he is important to Seimei.

Immediately after that, however, Seimei and Aone were arrested by Sukehime’s father, Motokata, on the accusation that they were trying to kill the baby prince Atsuhira. Once in the palace, however, Seimei merely laughed at them, getting out of the ropes they’d bound him in with ease. Motokata ordered the guards to kill him, but the Mikado’s other wife’s father, Morosuke, appeared and said no one would be killed without the Mikado’s approval. The courtiers acquiesced to this, but Doson, sitting off to the side, put a spell on a nearby guard, causing him to attack despite having no permission to do so. Aone took the blow for Seimei, and the controlled guard was killed by another.

Seimei and Hiromasa brought Aone’s body to the place they had met her a few nights before. There she came back to life, and she and Seimei explained to Hiromasa that she is actually over 150 years old, having eaten mermaid flesh to make her immortal, and that it was her duty to protect the castle from Prince Sawara, a man falsely accused of treason who died vowing he’d have revenge on the Mikado.

While Hiromasa was visiting a few days later, a messenger arrived to ask for Seimei’s help: the Mikado and Prince Atsuhira were being targeted by a namanari – a woman who becomes a demon. Knowing the only way to get rid of her would be to let her meet the man she won’t let go of, Seimei set up a trap using straw dolls to replace the Mikado and Prince Atsuhira. The namanari appeared, attempting to kill the straw dolls in her rage and sadness. She inadvertently revealed herself to be Sukehime, and the Mikado spoke, breaking the spell Seimei had created to keep him and Prince Atsuhira invisible.

Hiromasa tried to turn her away from the Mikado, but she attacked him instead. Seimei noticed there wa a spell on her, the point of which was to kill Hiromasa. He took off the spell, and she turned back to normal.

Doson, who had been the one both to curse Prince Atsuhira and to make Sukehime into a namanari, stepped up his efforts to control her, turning her into a full-fledged namanari. Seimei tried to stop him, starting a counter-spell, but the Mikado, in his fear, accidentally interfered. The namanari tried to attack the Mikado, so Seimei hurried the emperor and Prince Atsuhira away while Hiromasa stopped Sukehime.

Thwarted again, Doson went directly to Prince Sawara’s grave to bring him back. The spirit took over Doson’s body, sending a mass of evil spirits and gods to take over the city. Hiromasa planned to protect it, and Seimei agreed to help, for Hiromasa’s sake. Seimei gave Hiromasa a spell to take with him to the palace and then hurried to Prince Sawara’s grave, but it was too late to restore the barrier. Aone instructed him to go back to the capital, because he and Hiromasa are its guardians and they are most effective when together.

In the meantime Hiromasa tipped his arrow with the spell Seimei had given him, shooting it into Doson’s forehead, but the man merely showed off his immortality and used the same arrow to shoot Hiromasa. When Seimei found his friend dying he broke down to the point of tears, but Aone told Seimei to give her life to Hiromasa so that the city may be saved – it was her duty to search for the guardians of the city and assist them. Aone’s spirit, in Hiromasa’s body, confronted Prince Sawara’s in Doson’s, telling him that she’d waited for him all this time, and said they should go to another world together, and not destroy the country they loved. Their spirits left together, and Seimei told Doson to leave the city, because the spell Hiromasa shot into him meant he wouldn’t be able to win in a fight.

→ deviations
Crux: Doson feigned to surrender, but instead attacked Hiromasa. Seimei saw it coming and warned him, but it was too late, and Hiromasa was again killed.

Tangent: Hiromasa died almost immediately, not allowing for the emotional good-bye of his previous death. Seimei turned gravely to the task of stopping Doson. After a sword-fight that was merely a trick to allow him to cast a holy barrier spell, he defeated Doson. Doson didn’t want to accept his defeat, and killed himself.

Though Seimei now knew he was supposed to be a guardian of the capital, he didn’t see much point to it if the other guardian was dead. There had, after all, been two because two were needed, so if they weren’t both there, it likely meant they were no longer needed, meaning their role was fulfilled.

Seimei went back to how his life had been before meeting Hiromasa, lounging around his home and occasionally appearing at court, though his heart didn’t seem to be in it. One day while at the palace he overheard two nobles talking about a place they’d heard about called Soeldei. Thinking it sounded more interesting to see a new place than to stay in the capital, Seimei set out to Soeldei.

Allegiance: Hierophance

Reason: Though not exactly religious, his magic is an integral part of Seimei’s life. He is accustomed to taking care of the spiritual aspect of the world.
